About Ernest Chua

Born in Singapore in 1990 and now living in Canada, Ernest Chua is an accomplished autistic athlete and self-taught artist. His remarkable life story is one of love, faith, and the courage to achieve what once seemed impossible.

As a child, Ernest was afraid to leave the parking lot and enter a sports complex because he was water-phobic. Who would have thought a water-phobic child could become an international swimmer? Ernest did it, his journey is in the post. He didn’t just swim in local competitions; he moved up the ladder to provincial, national, and even international races.  He also learned how to race toward the finish line in both skiing and swimming, and went on to become a Special Olympics World Games medalist in both winter and summer sports. He represented Canada in cross-country skiing in Austria (2017), winning a gold and silver medal. He also competed in swimming in Dubai (2019), confidently taking home the first and last silver medals.

Beyond athletics, Ernest emerged as a prolific and talented visual artist at 33 years old (2023), when the day center he attends hired an art coordinator. His paintings move between representation and abstraction, featuring dense compositions, deep layers, and complex visual language. Although Ernest is functionally nonverbal, his artwork provided powerful expression to his imagination and inner world. Today, his paintings are sold locally and internationally and appear on product labels.

His transformation from a fearful young boy into a Special Olympian medalist and celebrated artist is a testament to how love, perseverance, and opportunity can make all things possible. With credit due to the unwavering support of his parents, the encouragement of his community, and his supportive church, he gradually overcame these challenges.

Some facts about Ernest: functionally nonverbal. He cannot tell us he is hungry or that his shoe is too tight… Will need 24/7 care, although competent in self-help. He is considered to be high needs.

Ernest’s story is meant to inspire others to keep moving forward, regardless of their circumstances. May his story bring a smile, renew hope, and remind us that even the most daunting challenges can lead to extraordinary blessings.
